The Place Previously opened in 2014 to 2018 on Amoy Street, I checked out the newly reopened Sugarhall houses on the level above Rosemead. The entrance to Sugarhall is via a nondescript backlane on Cecil Street with its original Amoy Street (2014-2018) signboard, which the Jigger & Pony Group relaunches as a rum-focused cocktail pub. It is a pretty rustic and contemporary interior with dark wood furnishings and warm fairy lights, as the space retains the structure of the 1920s heritage building. The Food I started with the returning crowd favourite Dark & Stormy (S$24), based on Hampden 8-year aged overproof Jamaican rum where the highball-style classic is finished with fresh lime and Sugarhall’s brand new “I Shot the Ginger” ginger beer brewed at The 1925 Brewing Co.. For bar snacks, the Chicken Liver Toast (S$8) is a rich slab of chicken liver mousse on a crispy toast which pairs well with the Dark & Stormy. I also had the Curry Empanadas (S$8), an easy bar snack to share on the table without making a mess.
